Passengers' Log  

The Passengers' Log is the journal of the Sydney Passengers. Produced three times a year, it includes both scholarly and non-scholarly articles, reviews, regular columns, and illustrations. There is an annual award for the best article to have appeared in the Log in the previous year (see below for more information and a list of past winners).

All contributions to the Log are welcome. Acceptance of submissions is at the discretion of the Editor. You do not have to be a member of the Passengers to contribute to the Log.

Contributions should be typed as Word documents with any additional formatting removed.

Illustrations should be in JPEG format. Minimum dimensions for photos should be 10,000x750 (minimum size should be 200KB).

 Carole Dukes Montpellier Award

The Carole Dukes Montpellier Award is presented annually to the Passengers who presents the best piece of research in the pages of The Passengers' Log. It is named in memory of Passenger Carole Dukes, an indefatigable researcher, and incorporates the name of the town of Montpellier in southern France where Sherlock Holmes spent time carrying out research into coal-tar derivatives as recounted in 'The Adventure of the Empty House' by Dr Watson.

The winner of the 2023 Carole Dukes Montpellier Award was Gary Nolan for his  article: The Curious Incident Of the Gun.

The Arthur Williams 'Admirable Cobber' award is assessed annually in conjunction with the Montpellier Award. It is awarded to a nominee that displays a high standard of Australian research and content. It is named in memory of Passenger Arthur Williams, who often wrote articles for the Log with an Australian theme. The name is in reference to Arthur's article in the Log about Carlyle Smythe, the agent who managed Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1920/21, who Doyle refered to as "an admirable cobber". The award is not necessarily presented every year and is not awarded simply on the highest score for the 'Australian Connection' of the Montpellier judging criteria. To win the award, a nominee article needs to have Australian content and research that, in the opinion of the Crew, matched Arthur's standard.
